The filling of the Holy Spirit Lesson 2

What is one of the evidences of the filling with the Holy Spirit?
1.It is “speaking to yourselves with songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

Ephesians 5:19
[19] addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

1.“Psalms” probably refers to the Book of Psalms as probably all of them have been set to music.

2.“Hymns” were composed by men to glorify GOD - they were on a very high plane.

3.The “spiritual songs” were less formal than either psalms or hymns -- probably some of them were composed as the person was singing.

4.This is the manifestation of the infilling of the Spirit because He brings joy into the life of the believer.

Some people look for joy in the wrong places.  They look for joy where it cannot be found.
1.Some businesses advertise a ‘Happy Hour.’

But people that try this are:

·NOT happy when they go in!

·NOT happy when they come out!

Believers DO NEED an attitude adjustment.

1.We do not need the spirits that come from a bottle.

2.We do need to be filled with the Holy Spirit DAILY!!

3.When we are filled we will radiate the joy of the Lord.

John 15:11
[11]These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

The fullness of joy is seen through our fellowship with the Father & with Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:3-4
[3] that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. [4]And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

1.Christians ought to have a good time!

2.We ought to have fun in the church - NOT a period of silliness - but the joy of the Lord should be there!!

3.This kind of joy comes through the filling of the Holy Spirit!!

Another evidence of being filled with the Spirit is the attitude of thanksgiving.

Ephesians 5:20
[20[ giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1.In the Book of Psalms there is a great deal of thanksgiving & praise to GOD.

2.It is on a high level - sincere and heartfelt.

3.This type of expression is too rare among believers today.

4.We should all say, “Praise the Lord & thanks be to GOD for His unspeakable gift”.

2 Corinthians 9:15
[15] Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

1.Can you say that from your heart?

2.It is no good unless it comes from your heart!

3.The filling of the Spirit produces a life of thankfulness so that we can honestly thank GOD for ALL things.

We need to show our love - If you love someone:
Tell them! Show them!

Dr. Howard Kelly was a great surgeon & great obstetrician.  He wrote in the field of obstetrics and his work was classic among doctors for a long time.  He was also a great Christian, a wonderful man of GOD.  The story is told of his taking a walk in the country outside the City of Baltimore.  As he walked, he became thirsty and stopped at a farmhouse for a drink of water. A little girl answered the door and said that her parents had gone to town and there was no water in the house.  However, there was some cold milk down at the spring. She asked him if he wanted a glass of milk and he said, “I surely would.”  He sat down while she went down to the spring to get the milk.  When she returned she brought him a cool glass of milk which he gladly drank.  The little girl asked him if he wanted another glass of milk and he replied, “I surely would.”  Once again she walked to the spring and returned with another glass of cool milk which he drank.  Then he thanked her and continued his walk. Not too many days later the little girl got sick and was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where Dr. Kelly worked.  Dr. Kelly was the doctor who examined her and he recognized her as the little girl who had given him the milk. He performed the necessary surgery that the little girl needed and took special care of her.  When it was time for her to go home, her parents came in very nervously for they had no money to pay for the operation and the hospital costs.  When the bill was presented to them, they opened it with trembling hands, expecting the worst.  Under the Total Balance was written, “Paid in full with 2 glasses of milk,” signed “Dr. Howard Kelly.”

This was love in action!  The love he expressed was the fruit of the Spirit because Dr. Kelly was a wonderful Christian.

Show people that you love them!

Be filled with the Spirit so there will be -
Love, Joy, & Thanksgiving in your life!

Why don’t you “drive into the gas station” and ask GOD to fill you up?
1.The old gas tank is empty.

2.You and I don’t have anything worthwhile in ourselves.

3.We need to go to Him and tell Him that we are empty without him.

4.We need the filling of the Holy Spirit so we can live for Him.

We need to see that:
1.By ourselves that it is an impossibility to live for Christ.

2.But He can do it through us if we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Philippians 4:13
[13] I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Let me repeat this because it is so important:
We are told to be filled with the Holy Spirit - this is the ONLY command given to the believer relative to the Holy Spirit.  The other ministries of the Holy Spirit are accomplished in us when we receive Christ.

1.Every believer is regenerated by the Holy Spirit.

John 1:12
[12] But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

2.The believer is also indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:9
[9]You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.   Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

The believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13
[13] In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

3.The believer is baptized by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:13
[13]For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

These 4 ministries of the Holy Spirit take place the moment the believer puts his trust in Christ.  It is all accomplished for us.

The only thing that is left for us is to obey His command to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Reflection:
Every believer should begin each day with a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit.  We read in James 4:2 “You do not have, because you do not ask.”  When you begin each new day, ask God for a fresh infilling - ask him to fill you anew for the new day - fill that tank so you can proceed on your journey!

We would not start on a long trip without fuel in our tank - we want our tank full.  The same thing applies to our spiritual journey, - we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit when we begin.
